Support Patriots & Paws Through Local Golf Tournament

Greg Raths is the Mayor Pro Tempore of Mission Viejo and President of the Executive Board of Patriots and Paws, a nonprofit dedicated to helping Veterans with home furnishings and companion dogs. Raths spoke to Megan Sandberg of Ink Wordsmiths about the nonprofit’s 4th annual golf tournament and fundraiser, which will take place on Monday, May 7th at 1:30 PM at the SeaCliff Country Club in Huntington Beach.

What is the purpose of this year’s golf tournament?

This event makes it possible to help fund Patriots and Paws for a year. We need funding for hauling trucks, rent for the warehouse, and insurance. It’s not cheap, and even though we’re all volunteers, money is needed to keep it going. It’s our biggest fundraiser of the year. The event itself, and the contributions, support our Active Duty and Veterans in Southern California who are looking for home furnishings and companion dogs.

What is your financial goal for this year’s tournament?

Our goal is to raise $50,000, and we’re looking for sponsors to help us meet that goal. We expect about 120 golfers, and most sponsors will sponsor a group of golfers so Veterans can play for no charge. They can sponsor a hole or the entire tournament. Western Mutual Insurance Group is our Tournament Title sponsor, providing $10,000. We believe $15,000 will cover the costs of the tournament and the remainder will go to our charity. The rest of the funds come from smaller events throughout the year, like our car/truck/motorcycle show in October, and an open house at our warehouse in the City Of Orange.

What has been most rewarding about your involvement in the organization?

For military guys, there’s a process when they get out of getting back into society. They need to rent or buy homes, and they need furnishing. It’s rewarding to see them come to the warehouse full of furniture and appliances and be able to furnish their home for no charge. They’re so thankful and appreciative that there’s a nonprofit like ours to help them get started in their new home, apartment or condo, wherever they’re at. It’s also rewarding to see those with mental and physical ailments have a companion dog and see how they work together as a team. The dogs especially help Veterans with disabilities get back in society, and they feel very appreciative of the dog. It’s a comforting feeling to have that dog—that unconditional love.

Patriots and Paws anticipates a day of world-class golfing, fine dining, silent and live actions, and attendance of man’s best friend. Businesses can also contribute $250 for a swag bag, and/or donate items to the auctions. Sponsoring the tournament is a chance for businesses to give back to the community, support local Veterans, and get their name out there.
